Asheville, N.C. - July 1, 2025 - Today, the National Women’s Soccer League Players Association (NWSLPA) released the list of players eligible to begin contract negotiations as the 2026 Free Agency Window officially opens. This marks a major milestone under the Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA), which guarantees free agency to every player at the end of their contract regardless of years of service and aligns the free agency window with the rest of the world.
Free agency was first introduced to the NWSL in 2022, when eligibility was tied to service years. Under the current CBA, every player becomes a free agent when their contract ends, and every new player enters the league as a free agent.
“This year’s free agency window reflects the progress we’ve made to empower Players with control over their own destiny, ” said Meghann Burke, ExecutiveDirector of the NWSLPA. "Free agency enables Players to align their priorities with a Team that best positions them to maximize their potential.”
“This window gives Players the ability to make informed, intentional choices about their careers. They see how clubs invest in people, build culture, and support Players’ lives on and off the field,” added Tori Huster, Deputy Executive Director of the NWSLPA. “It’s an opportunity to put that awareness into practice—choosing the right fit while raising expectations across the league.”
Players eligible on July 1 may negotiate 2026 season contracts with any NWSL club. The deadline for clubs to exercise their options was June 30 or else they were deemed waived. This ensures that free agents enter the market with clarity.
