WHAT IS THE PLAYERS ASSOCIATION?
We are a non-profit organization that represents all NWSL Players who are employed by the League.
WHO DOES THE NWSLPA REPRESENT?
We represent all players in NWSL, outside of the USWNT allocated players. This includes international players as well as Canadian allocated players, because they have all signed contracts with the NWSL. We prefer to refer to ourselves as just the "players of the NWSL", rather than the "non-allocated players".
WHAT'S THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A PLAYERS ASSOCIATION AND A UNION?
The NWSLPA is both. We chose to call our non-profit organization a Players Association. We are also recognized by the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) as a union.
HOW DID YOU GET TO BE A UNION?
We first formed the NWSLPA organization. Then we asked the NWSL to voluntarily recognized us as a union. They did so in November of 2017 so that's when we became an official labor union.
DO YOU GUYS HAVE A CBA (COLLECTIVE BARGAINING AGREEMENT?
Not right now. We have a basic agreement with the League form when they voluntarily recognized us as a union. That Voluntary Recognition Agreement will be in place until we feel that it's an appropriate time to begin work on a CBA.
WHEN WILL YOU HAVE A CBA?
We don't have a timeline in mind at the moment. Creating a CBA is an expensive and time-consuming process that we don't want to undertake until we feel it's appropriate for our organization and the League.
WHAT'S ON YOUR AGENDA? or WHAT'S YOUR MISSION?
We believe in working collaboratively with all parts of the League to make progress. We understand that a lot of people are sacrificing and lots of progress needs to be made on all fronts. Right now, our focuses are on working with the League to have a seat at the table when it comes to discussions and decisions. We have a great, open dialogue where we can share input and bring questions or issues there way to get answers directly from the League. We also work to provide extra benefits to players and improve the player experience as a whole through supporting one another and sharing resources.
SO I'M SURE YOU'LL BE ASKING FOR INCREASED SALARIES, RIGHT?
Everyone in the League obviously realizes that the players should be paid more and we agree! However, we believe that there are other areas to address first, and that when the League is in a place to be able to sustain higher salaries, we will share in that success. At the moment, we're focused on adding value to our player experience in creative ways, such as opportunities to take coaching courses and establish second sources of income.
